How Kacper Staniul built a growth marketing database with Airtable and Gumroad

Hey! What are you working on and what led you to building with no code? Have you got any previous experience of building sites/apps?

I'm the maker of Scrapbook, a growth tactics database. Around 2 or 3 years ago, I read Brian Balfour's article on becoming a user acquisiton expert, where he gave this piece of advice: "Keep a digital collection of examples and resources from other companies that provide inspiration and ideas. Every time I come across a great marketing email, landing page, ad creative, infographic, onboarding technique, etc, etc I store it and organize it in Evernote" I really liked this idea. Since that moment, I've been collecting my own list of resources and tactic ideas. Whenever I came across an interesting tactic idea, I added it to Airtable, described it, tagged it, noted if it requires any budget to run, and added screenshots. This way, my collection now consists of 251 tactics for every step of the funnel. And keeps growing. As it turned out to be a very valuable resource in my daily marketer's role, I thought that others may find it useful as well. That's how I came up with the idea to create this side-project. The problem was, I've already had 3 failed attempts at learning to code (I feel so bad admitting this), so trying the 4th one wasn't an option I were to launch this project anytime soon. So no-code was the only way to go.

What platforms and tools have you used to build Scrapbook? How long did it take to build?

I went with one of the simplest, fool-proof no-code stacks: - Carrd as the landing page builder - Airtable as the database - Gumroad for taking payments. It still took me a bit long to build it, as it is my first side-project and I'm not good at writing copy. Probably something like a week. Of course I'm not including here the time for editing the tactics' descriptions and the attempts at building this with Webflow and Bubble. But that's a whole different story ;)

How have you gone about growing your user base? What has been most effective?

I haven't really started any serious marketing efforts. But the project has been live just for a month. What I've done so far is announcing the product launch in various communities for marketers and makers. The most successful were Indie Hackers, Twitter, and BetaList.

Have you monetised it yet and if so, what is your revenue model?

Scrapbook has been monetized right from the start. You pay once and get lifetime access to the database (that's still growing whenever I find new, high-potential tactic ideas). It passed $1k in sales in 2 weeks after launching, so this and people's amazing feedback have been a good idea validation for me.

What has been the hardest part of building, growing or monetising Scrapbook?

The hardest part was actually before I decided on the stack to build this project. As mentioned before, my primary stack of choice was Webflow & MemberStack. When using these tools, I had the product almost ready, Stripe rejected my application. As MemberStack relies on Stripe for payments, I had to look for other solutions.

Do you have any tips on building, growing or monetising a no code product/business?

First, take advantage of what no-code tools are best at - launching your MVP fast. Then, of course, as with any early-stage project (and not only) - talk to your users a lot and iterate on their feedback. Second, don't be afraid to charge right from the beginning. If your product provides enough value, people will be happy to pay you for it. Same applies to raising prices (I've done this twice already and people are still saying that Scrapbook is great value for money), although you have to find the sweet spot. Last but not least, be a part of maker communities like No Code Founders and Indie Hackers. They're like the most supportive and friendly places on the Internet. Not only you'll learn a lot from other people's experience but also, you'll get lots of valuable feedback about building and growing your product.
