How Helen Ryles built a complete domain name service for side-projects

Hey! What are you working on and what led you to building with no code? Have you got any previous experience of building sites/apps?

I'm currently working on It's a collection of services and products all based around buying domain names for your next side project.

There is a free monthly newsletter that has lots of great, freely available domains. I sell branded domains that are ready to use. I also help people 1:1 if they are looking for something specific.

Most of my projects have been built in a similar ways, starting with existing tools and building up from there. I like to focus on the idea and try to use the best tools for the job!

I've built around 40 projects in the last 10 years and most of them had some NoCode elements to them!

What platforms and tools have you used to build NamesAce? How long did it take to build?

NamesAce is built on Carrd and Stripe. I also use TinyLetter for the newsletter service, Looka for the domain branding.

The services that NamesAce offers all started out separately and at different times. It's only recently that I've brought them all together under one landing page and the NamesAce brand.

The landing page only took a weekend but each of the components has had time spent on it too. Weekends here and there over the last few years. It has all been built in my spare time.

Originally I tested ideas out on Fiverr and other freelancing / gig sites to see what people needed help with and domain name searches were in demand.

I had developed methods and automated searches for finding good domains for my own projects so I tried to streamline those processes as much as possible for my customers.

It shows that you can test ideas out quickly without even needing a landing page, then slowly expand to other products and services in a similar industry.

How have you gone about growing your user base? What has been most effective?

My first customers for NameAce came when testing the service out on Fiverr and other gig platforms. I also helped people 1:1 in forums and Slack groups and made sales even before having a proper landing page.

If people want something, they'll buy from you whether you have a website up or not.

All of my projects are side-projects so I'm not marketing them full time. I like to create things that can exist without too much maintenance and tick along nicely in the background.

This means I can keep an eye out for the right opportunities where people are mentioning a particular pain around finding a great domain name. I just remember to share with them at the right time!

This isn't really a pro-active way to market things but it works for me. I'd rather provide long term value for someone through a free newsletter for a few months and get a customer that way than try ineffective and costly advertising techniques.

I like to help provide value first wherever I can and that usually helps to stick in their mind.

Have you monetised it yet and if so, what is your revenue model?

Yes! NamesAce has been profitable since it began.

When you test ideas out at zero cost, only the profitable ideas survive. You only ever move forward with the ones that have signs of traction. Your time is spent on the customers that need serving.

If you don't get customers, keep coming up with ideas until something strikes a pain point. You'll know it when you hit upon it!

Originally I started out doing custom domain searches as a one off cost. I have recently added in branded domain names so people can have a domain and a logo ready to use for their project.

I also have a free newsletter that helps keep the other products and services top of mind.

What has been the hardest part of building, growing or monetising NamesAce?

With NoCode the building of a business is the easy part. Crafting a product or service that people actually want is the difficult bit.

Finding ways to promote your product that fits with your personality can be quite challenging but it's always best to go with your gut instincts.

You can find a way to be profitable and not have to be pushy or burn out from 'selling' or buying ads. It just takes time to find what works well for you.

With making lots of NoCode projects sometimes the hardest part is just getting it live and sharing it with people. Pushing a project over the finish line is an achievement. So many ideas get left half finished that you should celebrate releasing something tiny!

Do you have any tips on building, growing or monetising a no code product/business?

I generally suggest to start really small and specific. Get a couple of projects out into the world and get feedback on them fast. It's one of the greatest motivators.

Some projects are just for learning and that's fine. If you want something to be profitable then you should think about monetization up front.

Test different technologies, monetization strategies and marketing methods. Each time you try one you gain so much knowledge and you can roll that in to your next project.

I think out of about 40 projects I've done, 1 in 3 were profitable. There were 2 projects that didn't work out for every one that did! It's easy to get disheartened so try to remember to enjoy the process too.

The best way to grow or monetize your NoCode project is just to share, share, share! People will forget and you will need to remind them.
