How JC Alvarez built a career-tracking app with Bubble

Hey! What are you working on and what led you to building with no code? Have you got any previous experience of building sites/apps?

Hi all! I’m building Clarify a SaaS that allows professionals to add their achievements and track the value they create. Clarify provides professionals with the tools and data necessary to manage their careers. I’ve built Clarify with ‘no-code’ on nights and weekends and any time in between my full-time job.

The closest I’ve gotten to build sites/apps is by building a replenishment template and algorithm using VBA and Excel. It has been used to replenish and manage over $100M in sales to the world’s largest retailer. I built this as a tool/app for my team at my full-time job.

What platforms and tools have you used to build Clarify? How long did it take to build?

Clarify is built using Bubble for the SaaS and Landen for the landing page. Bubble has proven to be extremely powerful for what I need. Landen is by far the best site builder I’ve used, extremely customizable and easy to use.

So Clarify originally started in 2015, however I put it on hold for a few months which later turned into 4 full years. I picked the project back up early November 2018 and have been building on and off, iterating as I go. From concept to functional product I’d say it took me a little over 12 weeks, however it’s been lightning speed ever since as I’ve gotten my hands around Bubble and its functionality.

How have you gone about growing your user base? What has been most effective?

This has been slow and full of speed bumps, Google Ads have been the most effective. Our target customer is likely to be found on LinkedIn however their ad cost is prohibitive at this point in time. It’s been an odd approach of mine in the sense that none of my friends, family, or colleagues know that I’ve built Clarify and I work with 3,000+ people day-to-day. Moving forward I intend to leverage my own network to grow the Clarify community from the current 300+.

Have you monetised it yet and if so, what is your revenue model?

We have not generated any revenue, however, I haven’t made it a point to actually charge anything. There are several ways to generate revenue and we will be rolling those out in the coming months.

What has been the hardest part of building, growing or monetising Clarify.

As a solopreneur it’s like playing a very tough and twisted mental game. Making trivial decisions is at many times a conversation with myself, which slows me down from moving faster. I’ve recently joined a paid maker community which helps ensure members are invested in the community, this has helped me ask questions and share-in with other solopreneurs.

Do you have any tips on building, growing or monetising a no code product/business?

Stay focused and avoid the noise. Stop reading or listening to podcasts and start building, with tools like Bubble you can put your idea to MVP faster than ever before, and this is the easy part. The hard part is finding the passion and dedication to keep things going even when you think it’s all falling apart. You’ll learn plenty along the way, whether you fail or not.
